The Pacman guitar

Someone is selling a Pacman guitar...old school

From the maker of the Union Flag guitar we looked at previously (and which is listed on eBay again) comes this guitar for lovers of retro video games, the Pacman guitar. Again, the maker/seller is claiming this is a "prototype" but I can't really imagine that these novelty designs could ever go on to become fully-fledged production guitars; I think he'd be better off continuing to build individual novelty guitars, perhaps offering a bespoke service for bands wanting crazy designs.

And - before someone comments - yes, I am aware of the other Pacman guitar that has appeared on just about every internet guitar forum devoted to "weird" guitars.

The above guitar is currently listed on eBay UK with an oprimistic But It Now price of £330.

MS Gong Ride 2011

On Sunday 6th November, me and a few mates took on the MS Sydney to Gong Bike Ride which is 90km's worth to raise a bit of cash for MS, and to have a bit of a laugh. We finished after about 4.5 hours and had just enough time to make it to Haworth team mate Raff's wedding in Bulli at 3pm.

We raised about $500 all up and gave our blood sweat and tears!!

So this is why it's so hard to get Gibson at the moment...more raids by FBI

UPDATE: 25 August 2011 saw Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz issue a statement in response to the Federal raids on Gibson's Nashville and Memphis facilities, accusing the authorities of 'bullying' Gibson Guitar.

Juszkiewicz said: "Gibson is innocent and will fight to protect its rights. Gibson has complied with foreign laws and believes it is innocent of any wrong doing. We will fight aggressively to prove our innocence."

He continued: "Agents seized wood that was Forest Stewardship Council controlled. Gibson has a long history of supporting sustainable and responsible sources of wood and has worked diligently with entities such as the Rainforest Alliance and Greenpeace to secure FSC-certified supplies. The wood seized on 24 August satisfied FSC standards.

"Gibson has complied with foreign laws and believes it is innocent of any wrong doing." Henry Juszkiewicz

"The Federal Department of Justice in Washington, DC, has suggested that the use of wood from India that is not finished by Indian workers is illegal, not because of US law, but because it is the Justice Department's interpretation of a law in India.

"If the same wood from the same tree was finished by Indian workers, the material would be legal. This action was taken without the support and consent of the government in India."

Presumably we haven't heard the last of this ongoing saga. Read the full Gibson press release here, or watch Henry Juszkiewicz respond on video.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Earlier this month, Gibson Guitar CEO Henry Juszkiewicz said, "The true wood guitar is disappearing quickly... we need to act now because it just won't be around in 10 years." Yet Wednesday (24 August 2011) again saw Gibson offices and production facilities in Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee raided by Federal agents from the US Fish and Wildlife service.

As previously reported, 2009 infamously saw Gibson's Nashville factory raided by the FBI as part of an investigation into the source of its materials, but to date, no charges have been brought. June 2011 saw the US Department Of Justice file a civil case relating to the company's alleged sourcing of ebony from Madagascar, where the harvest and export of unfinished ebony is prohibited.

According to The Tennessean, Federal agents were tight-lipped about the reasons for Wednesday's simultaneous raids in Nashville and Memphis: "We can't get into specifics right now," said Nicholas Chavez, special agent in charge with the US Fish and Wildlife Service, "This is an ongoing investigation."

Eyewitness accounts suggest that tourists arriving at the Gibson Factory in downtown Memphis found themselves locked outside the facility while the raid took place. Meanwhile, in Nashville, "news reporters and photographers strained to see what was happening from across the street."

These are challenging times for a company still reeling from disastrous flood damage to its Nashville factory in May 2010. The Gibson Guitar Company has so far refused to comment, but is reported to be "fully co-operating" with Federal officials.

AC/DC launch range of wines. No “Whole Lotta Rosé”

This is cool....

AC/DC have teamed up with Australian vintner Warburn Estate and jumped on the celebrity bandwagon of having your name on a wine bottle. They’ll sell varieties with names inspired by their hits. Highway to Hell cabernet sauvignon, You Shook Me All Night Long muscat and Hells Bells sauvignon blanc. Unfortunately they missed what must have been the biggest opportunity by not including a Whole Lotta Rosé in the range.

Kiss, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Iron Maiden and Whitesnake have all launched their own wines. The AC/DC wines will be on sale across Australia.

According to Ernst & Young LLP, the award recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who demonstrate excellence and extraordinary success in such areas as innovation, financial performance and personal commitment to their businesses and communities. Mr. D’Addario was selected by an independent panel of judges, and the award was presented at a gala event at the Marriott Marquis on June 8, 2011.

The D’Addario family art of string-making dates back to 1680 when Donato D’Addario was born to a string-making family in the tiny village of Salle, Italy. After immigrating to the U.S.A. in 1905, Charles D’Addario began first importing strings from his family in Italy and eventually began manufacturing in a home workshop in Astoria, Queens, NY. Epiphone announce limited edition 50th anniversary 1961 Casino

www.haworthguitars.com.au

via Guitar News Daily by Dave Mac on 7/20/11

Excepts from the press release:

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the first 1961 Casino, Epiphone is proud to announce the new, limited-edition 1961 Anniversary Casino, which has many features that were discontinued after the original Casino’s first year of production. Epiphone has produced a total of only 1,961 Anniversary Casinos, each with a numbered Certificate of Authenticity – a quality that enhances the guitar’s appeal and collectability. The exclusive Epiphone 1961 Anniversary Casino is available beginning in July 2011 at authorized Epiphone retailers worldwide for the U.S. MSRP of $1,332 (trapeze tailpiece) and $1,415 (Tremotone™), while supplies last.

Introduced in 1961, the original Casino had a combination of unique features that ultimately were never offered beyond that first year. These include the triangle metal logo badge on the headstock, “Dot” fingerboard inlays, a blank two-ply “bullet” trussrod cover, a tortoise-colored pickguard with foil “E”, and black dog-ear P-90 pickups. Epiphone has faithfully reproduced these features for a one-of-a-kind retro look not found on Casinos produced after 1961. Other features include the correct “burst” patterns on front and back, a neck joint at the 16th fret (instead of the 17th), Wilkinson™ vintage-style tuners with small plastic buttons, and the historically accurate rectangle “blue label” inside the sound hole.

No detail of the original 1961 Casino has been missed. Epiphone has recreated the original U.S.A. made black P90s, which offer a stellar combination of high output and biting treble response. They also feature vintage two-conductor, braided, shielded wiring and black plastic covers. Other electronics faithful to the original Casino include a Switchcraft™ 3-way toggle and 1/4″ output jack.

The Casino is completely hollow, which contributes to its unique, signature sound made most famous by The Beatles. The body is made of five-layer Maple/Birch with a solid Mahogany SlimTaper™ neck, attached using the traditional mortise and tenon neck joint, hand-fitted and glued to the body. Hardware includes a tune-o-matic bridge and the choice of either a Trapeze tailpiece or Epiphone’s new reissue of the original Tremotone™ vibrato. Each 1961 Casino also features an original-style hard case with gray exterior and blue plush interior.

Think You Know Haworths? Read Our Core Story

Normal 0 false false false EN-AU X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4

Beginning with a full-time Teaching career at Campbelltown High School in 1985, Phil Haworth was approached to help a year 10 student who needed help making an acoustic guitar. Phil decided to help the young man, and by doing so, discovered a passion for crafting stringed instruments. In 1999 Phil left his teaching position to start up his new business Haworth Guitars.

In the early years, Phil focused mostly on building and repairing stringed instruments, but as the years progressed, the demand for more brands and more types of musical instruments increased. Hence the expansion in 2000 from the workshop to shopfront in Johnson Street Kiama Downs, and then 2005 the purchase of an additional store in Warilla. In 2008, these two stores were amalgamated into a two-level superstore Haworth's Shellharbour Music Centre with adjacent Warehouse, in Durgadin Drive Albion Park Rail.

Nowadays, Phil is getting back into some more casual guitar-building at home. The business is good hands though with Phil's son Glenn Haworth taking the reins in 2011 becoming General Manager and Director of the company and Glenn's sister Deanna managing the webpage.

Over the years, the Haworth team have discovered there are 6 main reasons why people deal with Haworth's and why they keep on coming back again and again and again.

Luthier Reputation

Phil Haworth has constructed and sold countless stringed instruments over his 30-plus years of being a luthier (stringed instrument maker) and has passed much of his knowledge on to the Haworth team today

Skilled Repair Centre

Setupsweb2
This hub of stringed instrument repairs as well as drums and other instruments, gives the customer confidence in dealing with a company who know their product inside and out.  Every guitar or bass sold at Haworth's comes with two complimentary services valued at $138

Young Blood

Glenn Haworth is determined to put his own mark on the business while continuing the traditions his father started. Glenn is dedicated to making the Haworth Experience ever better for his customers and with the support of his youthful staff, will continue to grow the family business in a fun and exciting way

Warehouse & Ebay Pricing

Due to Haworth's huge warehouse and strong online presence, their prices are often the lowest in the country, and if they aren't, they always do their best to beat any advertised price

Huge Range of Stock

Acoustic_matonssmall
With all the leading major brands at Haworth's fingertips and with two huge levels of floor space to showcase them, there is never any shortage of choice.

Rock-Star Service

Phil and his team have always treated their customer's like old friends and have always done their best to exceed each clients' expectations. This tradition continues today, with all staff being made very aware that part of the Haworth's Mission Statement is to provide customers with the Rock-Star experience

Gibson 50th Anniversary SG Standard 24 - Limited Run

Gibsonsg50th
Way back in 1961 when the SG Standard temporarily replaced the Les Paul Standard in the Gibson line up, few were aware that a future icon of rock guitar was being introduced to the scene. Originally called the "Les Paul/SG", this radical, double-cutaway electric with two dramatic asymmetrical pointed "horns" and a thin all-mahogany body was worlds away from the single-cutaway maple and mahogany Les Paul that it replaced. It proved to have similar power, punch and versatility, but also expressed a voice all its own, one that has grabbed many heavy rock and metal players in particular, alongside countless classic rock and blues artists. By the time the single-cutaway Les Paul returned in the late '60s, the SG Standard was already a legend, and had forever claimed its place in rock history.

To celebrate 50 years since the introduction of this seminal design, Gibson USA unveils the SG Standard 24, a guitar that captures all the classic ingredients of Gibson's great double-cutaway solidbody model, with a few clever twists to make it even more versatile for today's demanding performer. Like the best SGs of the past 50 years, the SG Standard 24 starts with a solid mahogany body and glued-in quarter-sawn mahogany neck, a pairing that ensures ringing sustain, superb tonal depth, and plenty of clarity and richness. The body's thin dimensions make this a pleasurably light guitar to play, while its classically beveled edges also make it comfortable on the forearm. To update the format for the 21st century, however, Gibson USA gives the SG Standard 24 the 24-fret neck that its name implies, with even the uppermost of its medium-jumbo frets easily accessible thanks to the SG's legendary deep double-cutaway design. Combine this with a beautifully ergonomic rounded neck profile, and you've got one of the sweetest playing rock machines available today.

Two of Gibson's popular PAF-style 57 Classic humbucking pickups translate the SG Standard 24's sonic goodness to your amp of choice, yielding anything from deep, warm vocal tones in the neck position to endless growl and roar in the bridge, to round and snappy tones in between. The classic pairing of a Nashville Tune-o-matic bridge and stopbar tailpiece keeps it all rock-solid and resonant, while up at the other end a PLEK-cut Corian nut ensures clean intonation and singing sustain. Top it all off with a set of vintage-style tuners with pearloid buttons, a unique "50 Years" headstock emblem, and a high-gloss nitrocellulose finish in Antique Ebony, and you've got a spectacular celebration of one of the world's favorite electric guitars, all wrapped up in an instrument you can gig with today. Each guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case and owner's manual, and is covered by Gibson's Limited Lifetime Warranty and 24/7/365 Customer Service. Check out your own SG Standard 24 today, and prepare to rock for the ages.

Man repels attackers with broken guitar

Guitars aren't only good just for playing, they are also good for beating the s@*t out of people and saving your life!

A man armed with nothing but a broken guitar repelled an attack by two men in which his throat was cut.

The 48 year old man needed 26 stitches to his wrist, neck, ear and chest following the attack close to his home in Muirhouse, near Edinburgh, Scotland. He had suffered a three inch cut to his throat, two cracked ribs, a bruised chest bone, a black eye and a bruised cheek bone after being hit over the head with a bottle and stabbed.

Today he said he was relieved to be back home and said: “I’m still a bit dizzy. I’m stunned by what happened. It was totally unexpected.”

He said he was attacked and at one point fended off his attackers with a broken guitar.

Two men, aged 32 and 34, have been charged with attempted murder.
